Dr. Quentin Young remembered in Hyde Park

Hyde Park native, Dr. Quentin Young, who served the community through his health practice and activism, died Monday, March 7 at the age of 92.

Born in 1923, Young lived on the South Side his whole life. His son, Michael Young, said Hyde Park has always been where his roots were.

In a July 1972 interview with the Hyde Park Herald, Young said, “I have an abiding sense of responsibility to Hyde Park.”

Young began practicing medicine after graduating from the University of Chicago and the Northwestern Medical School. He opened his private practice for internal medicine in the Hyde Park neighborhood and stayed for 61 years until he retired just seven years ago.

“I always felt comfortable with him…it was a delight having him as my doctor,” said Hyde Park resident Jay Mulberry. “He truly believed he should explain things to his patients and take time with them.”

For the people who knew him, it was clear his passion for the medical field expanded outside of his own practice and patients, especially in concerns of healthcare.

“His philosophy about health care was simple and just: one big-tent America, everybody in, nobody out,” said Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., who was also a patient of Young.

In 2001, Young walked 167 miles across the state to promote health care initiatives. He fought for single-payer healthcare in the same approach that he fought for civil rights and social justice.
