A 2003 Chicago Indymedia Year In Review

2003 Year in Review
The Congress Hotel strike and the FCC fight, the FTAA in Miami and the WTO in Cancun, resolutions against war on Iraq and against the USA PATRIOT Act, gay rights victories in Texas and Massachusetts, the emptying of Death Row and the filling of jail cells with Lake Shore Drive protestors, Rachel Corrie and Edward Said, Rene Maxwell and Juancho Donahue--this is 2003 as told by those who posted to Chicago Indymedia.
The corporate media, during the end of an old year and the start of a new one, is replete with all kinds of retrospectives and timelines about the year that just ended. I decided to do the same for Chicago Indymedia for 2003, for what might arguably be the most eventful year in the history of Chicago activism.

I was tempted to write an essay about the year, but in the course of assembling the following collection of links, I realized that it would be more apropos to let the efforts and stories posted speak for themselves. After all, Chicago Indymedia is a collaborative effort, and hardly the reflections of a single person. So, why not provide this year in review with links to the words of those who lived it and told it. Besides, such year-in-review essays tend to have (in my opinion, at least) all the readability of a phone book, and there's little sense in adding more words to the pile if they aren't necessary. Instead, assemble the links in a helpful reference.

I have two main criteria for inclusion in this review: if it was posted to Chicago Indymedia, and if it had some connection or importance locally, to the Chicago area. There are exceptions to be sure, and probably omissions that should be included. If you have something you think is worthy of inclusion in this collection, feel free to comment or post.

And with that, I give you this review of 2003, told by those who took part--divided (more or less arbitrarily) in the following topics.

War and Iraq
LGBT Rights
The media democracy movement
Israel/Palestine
Labor Struggles
Civil liberties & civil rights
Global Justice
