Dear Nav and everyone -

Thanks for writing to let us know about Dan's death. We hadn't heard until tonight, when we received 4 emails about it.

Please keep us informed about the plans for a memorial. Stephanie and I are going out of town

Subject: Dedicated Chicago Activist, Girlfriend Die in Early Morning Car Crash

I got a very sad early email confirming what I had initially heard on NPR just prior: Dan Perry and his girlfriend died in a early morning hit and run car accident near Agusta in California. Two other people in Dan's car are critically injured and currently at Cook County hospital. It has been speculated that the other driver of the truck that struck Dan's car may have been drinking and then fled the scene.

For those of you who didn't know Dan, he was a really, really cool, caring guy who was very politically astute and genuinely committed to creating a better world. A tireless advocate and volunteer for New World Resource Center, a regular member of the Chicago Socialist Party, a lifelong activist for social justice, a trained paramedic, Dan had finally got into the electrical workers union a while back, fulfilling a longtime vocational and poltical aspiration.

In addition, as an avid supporter of Glascow Celtic Football Club, he would also be regularly be seen in the wee hours of the morning at the town at the Globe Pub cheering on his Hoops. Finally, he had also gained noteriety as a DJ, spinning "Northern Soul" records at various locations around town. He was all of 33 years old.

I cannot reiterate how much of a good guy he was; he will be really, really missed, both by those who knew him and by those who would have known him. A memorial is already in the works.

Here's the early morning wire report:

Arrest in double fatal hit-run
Chicago Tribune
December 26, 2006, 8:02 AM CST

Police this morning said they have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run on Chicago's West Side that killed two people and injured two others Christmas Day.

The two men who were inside a red pick-up truck that slammed into the victims' car fled the scene on foot.

The crash occurred at West Augusta Boulevard and North California Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood at 3:50 a.m. Killed were Daniel Parry, 33, of the 700 block of North Damen Avenue, and Megan McMahon, believed to be in her mid-20s, officials said.

Erin Johnson, a friend of Parry, said he was a trained emergency medical technician who was ``all about safety.''

``He was well-known for telling people to wear their seat belts and would make sure the car doors were locked,'' she said.

The other two passengers in the car, both women, were transported to Stroger Hospital, where they remained in critical condition, said News Affairs Officer Marcel Bright.

Police did not release the names of the injured passengers.
