On Wisconsin: Antiunion Measures in Madison Spur Local, National Democracy Protests

Solidarity foreverOn February 15, 2011, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker proposed a bill to remove collective bargaining rights and reduce pay and benefits for Wisconsin public sector unions. That proposal spurred growing protests at the state capital in Madison, Wisconsin ever since, and an evacuation by fourteen Democrats in the Wisconsin Senate (the "Wisconsin 14") to block a quorum needed for a vote. Solidarity protests in support of Wisconsin workers also grew, as did sister protests against similar anti-union measures in other states.

On March 10, 2011, the Wisconsin Senate approved on a variation of the bill which didn't require a quorum, which was later signed into law. Despite the questionable (and possibly illegal) maneuver and a homecoming by the Wisconsin 14, massive protests in Madison will continue and more are planned.
