Daley's Latest Scheme: A Massive Surveillance Camera Network in Chicago

Mayor Daley has announced plans to unleash a massive wave of surveillance cameras across Chicago. The wave is billed as a boon for emergency medical services and crime prevention. But no provisions are being made as to surveillance abuse or privacy invasion, nor are considerations being raised as to how such a network could be used against protests or political organizers.

In preliminary work for this camera network, Chicago officials even went to London to learn about London's 200,000-camera surveillance system as a possible model, even though crime in London has increased over the past ten years. Read More | Slashdot commentary | Corporate Coverage
