RECENT HEADLINES FROM THE GLOBAL INDYMEDIA NETWORK
Brazilian Radio Activists Successfully Repel Government Closure Threat
Brazil Indymedia featured the successful defense of a community radio station in Brazil against a government shutdown threat. On September 15, 2011, students and activists involved with a community radio station called A Rádio Muda, translated to English as "The Dumb Radio", received a visit from Brazilian federal police and from Anatel, the Brazilian Agency of Telecommunications. A Rádio Muda was threatened with shutdown, even though the visiting police had no warrant. The police and Anatel claimed they merely wanted to install a power measuring device, and request the signing of a tax assessment notice. A Rádio Muda defenders refused both requests, and local radio supporters mobilized to remove broadcasting equipment before it could be seized by authorities. No equipment seizure was made, but the police and Anatel vowed to return with the necessary warrant. The radio station has been harassed by police in the past, most recently in 2009.

40,000 Fish in California Released in Historic Animal Liberation Act
Portland Indymedia featured an action, presumably carried out by animal rights activists, in San Francisco Bay. Quoting from the feature, dated October 5, 2011: "In what may be the largest liberation of animals in U.S. history, nets were cut at a holding pen in the San Francisco bay this week, releasing 40,000 fish into the wild. There has not yet been a claim of responsibility by the Animal Liberation Front or other groups. A police spokesperson describes how the fish were released: '[one or more people] came along with essentially what are wire cutters to do this. It was purposeful. Someone knew what they were doing.' An employee [at the The Tiburon Salmon Institute] where the salmon were held says he speculates this may be the act of an animal rights group. If this was the act of animal liberators, it would be the largest recorded animal liberation ever in the U.S. The largest previous liberation was the Animal Liberation Front raid of the Drewelow and Sons fur farm in New Hampton, Iowa, in 2000, where 14,000 mink were released. The Tiburon Salmon Institute is now soliciting funds to purchase security cameras."

Across the Nation, Demonstrators Fight to Save the U.S. Postal System
Indybay featured efforts by unions and activists to save the U.S. Postal Service. Quoting from the feature: "On September 27th, thousands of members of the four employee unions of the United States Postal Service joined forces with allies and community members to send a message to the nation and its Congress. All around the country, protesters demonstrated against proposals to close thousands of post offices, eliminate Saturday deliveries, lay off workers, cut postal workers’ pay, and end collective bargaining rights." The feature highlighted some of the California actions in solidarity: In Sacramento, postal workers demonstrated in front of the office of Republican Congressman Dan Lungren. In Palo Alto, employees belonging to the National Association of Letter Carriers were joined by the Raging Grannies in a boisterous demonstration. Together they called for an end to the attack on unionized public workers."

Occupy Wall Street Actions Electrify America and the World
Indymedia chapters in the United States and worldwide have chronicled the growing movement under the banner Occupy Wall Street. A sampling of the many Indymedia features include the following: New York City Indymedia reported on the September 24th attack on on Occupy Wall Street by New York police, where police used an orange mesh so-called "freedom fence" to seize and arrest all at once a group of 80 to 100 women. DC Indymedia reported that on October 3rd, Occupy DC was able to shut down a DC branch of Bank of America with a team of just six protesters. Indymedia UK reported the launch of nine Occupy protests in the United Kingdom which launched on October 15th, the day of global actions inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement, which on that date counted 1,039 events in 87 countries worldwide. LA Indymedia featured the launch of Occupy LA subtitled "Critical Perspectives", highlighting the discussions going on in Los Angeles and elsewhere about the movement, its meaning, and its trajectory. Boston Indymedia highlighted the raid by Boston Police against Occupy Boston on the morning of October 10th, one of the largest mass arrests in Boston history, and one of the most brutal, with reports of one protester hit in the throat and another whose wrists were sliced open by an officer. And in Chicago, Occupy Chicago drew hundreds of participants who "march…each day…After an hour long general assembly meeting, demonstrators headed through the financial district, Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile and back to base camp to once more spread messages of solidarity, positivity and persistence in the face of a political system that’s left 99% of Americans without a real voice in governance…While it may be young and still trying to get organized, the movement to Occupy America is growing and cohering. And though many went home after [an Occupy Chicago march on October 2nd], more than a hundred stayed to continue organizing and evangelizing, with no plans to leave until they feel their job is done."
