Occupy Chicago Claims New Home on Global Day of Action

Mass Mobilizations Take Place in Nearly 1,000 Cities Around the World

CHICAGO 10/14/11 -- This Saturday, October 15th, people from all walks of life in communities across the globe will fill the streets to demand real democracy, without interference from big business and the corrupt political elite. Locally, Saturday marks the 23rd day of the occupation of Chicago’s financial district. Occupy Chicago says the movement will secure a new home base after a march, beginning at 6:30pm, at Jackson and LaSalle.

Occupy Chicago asks supporters to bring tents, bikes, sleeping bags, and anything else necessary to set up an occupation. They say they will take whatever steps are needed to non-violently secure a new home for Occupy Chicago, in order to create space for broader participation in the movement, and to demonstrate their dedication to a long-lasting and secure occupation.

“Saturday we’ll celebrate the global movement, and Occupy Wall Street’s inspiring defense of their space,” says Chris Clouds, who has been participating in Occupy Chicago for 15 days. “We will be marching out of the financial district to stake out a new home for Occupy Chicago. We are a peaceful, non-violent movement, and we count on the support of individuals and organizations throughout the city to help us settle our new space.”

The call for the global day of action comes from a Spanish group, United for Global Change (15october.net), and as of Friday, October 14th, people in 951 cities, in 82 countries, will participate in the event.

“Our future is in jeopardy, being held hostage by a tiny but powerful percentage of the global population,” says Mark Banks, who has been participating in Occupy Chicago for 22 days. “Nothing can hold back the power of the 99% when we unite for a common goal. We are growing exponentially, every day, all over the world. We will not be moved.”

Since Sept. 23, Occupy Chicago has been utilizing the sidewalks of the financial district to raise awareness of the corruption and complicity in the banking industry and government.
