BREAKING: Whittier blockade called off, picket underway, support needed
Pressure by activists in support of La Casita have have succeeded, for the moment, in suspending a security blockade. A picket by community supporters is planned. Below are some dispatches at the protest scene from the Facebook page of the Whittier solidarity committee.
The yello[w] police tape has come down but still police presence. Call Rep. Eddie Acevelo at 773-843-1500 and Tony Munoz 773-869-9050 to publically show their support for the agreement they had regarding the funding of state funds to be used for the renovation not demolition of the Field House. We need for them to come out reiterate their support for the Parent whittier committee.
YOUR CALLS HAVE WORKED! THE BLOCKADE HAS BEEN CALLED OFF. CPD AND CPS SECURITY ARE STILL ON THE STREET. *WE NEED TO CONTINUE CALLING CPS (773.553.1500) TO TELL CEO BRIZARD TO MEET W/ THE PARENTS AT WHITTIER. *CALL ALDERMAN SOLIS (773.523.4100) AND TELL HIM TO KEEP HIS AGREEMENT THAT ALLOCATED TIF FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR RENOVATING LA CASITA. *CALL STATE SENATOR MUNOZ (773.843.1500) AND STATE REP ACEVEDO (773.843.1500) TO PUBLICLY DECLARE THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE PARENTS.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO PICKET THROUGHOUT THE DAY. WE NEED PEOPLE TO KEEP COMING THROUGH LA CASITA. YOUR CONTINUED PHYSICAL PRESENCE HAS BEEN KEY IN TEMPORARILY PREVENTING CONSTRUCTION WORKERS FROM ENTERING WHITTIER AS WELL AS SENDING A MESSAGE TO CPS AND THE CPD THAT THE PARENTS AT WHITTIER ARE NOT ALONE AND HAVE THE SUPPORT OF MANY ALLIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. SO COME THROUGH!!
