Youth Attacked by Police Officer Responds to Cop's Criminal Indictment

Cop beating of handcuffed 19-year-old caught on police surveillance camera
19-year-old police beating victim Gregory Jeffries and his attorneys are disputing a Chicago Police sergeant's account of his beating of the youth outside of a south side restaurant on October 11th.

Sergeant Edward Howard, Jr. attempted to shift blame for the attack to the youth at the sergeant's felony bond hearing last Friday. The attack, caught on police surveillance videotape, clearly shows Howard repeatedly hitting Jeffries, whose hands were cuffed behind his back.

Howard attempted to justify his attack on Jeffries by saying that the handcuffed youth deserved the beating because he was allegedly preparing to spit on the sergeant. Jeffries and his lawyers at Loevy & Loevy Attorneys emphatically deny that charge, saying that it is a false cover story Howard is using to excuse his own misconduct.

"While we are gratified that the Cook County States' Attorney's office Friday decided to charge the officer with two felonies, it is important to note that Howard's actions were far from the only alleged criminal actions by police that day," said Jeffries' attorney, Jon Loevy. "The video shows several other officers from the Gresham District casually watching the beating of Jeffries and neither intervening to protect him nor reporting Howard's apparent wrong-doing to their superiors."

Jeffries is a freshman at Kennedy-King College majoring in Automotive Technology. He is a graduate of South Shore High School and a resident of the South Shore neighborhood.
