Chicago, IL – Students in the Chicago area, including students Wright College, Columbia College, and University of Illinois- Chicago, are organizing a demonstration at the Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago to speak out against the FBI investigation of antiwar and international solidarity activists. Beginning last September, 23 people across the Midwest, many from Chicago, have been summoned to appear before a federal grand jury in Chicago.

Organizers of the rally include Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Columbia Art Activists, who plan to deliver a mock subpoena to Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald is responsible for what is being called an attack on the antiwar and international solidarity movements, and on the Arab and Muslim community.

“Fitzgerald is leading the outrageous political witch hunt against antiwar activists, international solidarity activists, and Palestinian-Americans, in an attempt to intimidate and criminalize those who speak out against U.S. foreign policy,” said Chapin Gray, a member of the UIC chapter of SDS. “We think it’s time Fitzgerald answer to those he’s trying to intimidate and scare into silence. We want the grand jury stopped. We want an end to the FBI repression.”

The event was planned close to January 14th, the 82nd anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther King, Jr., to highlight the fact that King himself was also subject to FBI harassment. The event is set to start at 9 am at the Federal Plaza, 219 S. Dearborn Street. For background information on the case, visit www.stopfbi.net.
