On the 4th anniversary of the Iraq war, join a march down Michigan Ave. to stop funding war and occupation and bring the troops home now. Rally to follow in Daley Plaza.
On the 4th Anniversary of the War
Stop Funding War and Occupation!
TROOPS HOME NOW!
MARCH and RALLY
TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2007
6:00 PM - Assembly - 24 W. Walton Street
7:30 PM - March - Down Michigan Ave. to Daley Plaza
If you're critical of this war but have never taken part in an antiwar action, now it's even more important than ever to participate. Hundreds of thousands have died, including over 3,000 U.S. soldiers and as many as 650,000 Iraqis - with those numbers growing daily.
Americans have paid roughly half a trillion dollars for the war - including over $20 billion from Illinois residents - all funds that could instead have funded acess to quality health care, housing and education. And leaders from both parties have vowed to keep the dollars flowing. Meanwhile, the U.S. government continues to bankroll the brutal occupation of Palestine, support Israeli aggression in Lebanon, continues its 5 year invasion of Afghanistan and threaten future attacks against Iran.
On March 20th, take a stand. Tell the government we want money for human needs, not war and corporate greed
ABOUT THE M-20 COALITION.
On January 6th, over 100 individuals and representatives of organizations gathered to begin organizing the Chicago area's response to the 4th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The group voted to host a march on Michigan Avenue on the evening of Tuesday, March 20th, followed by a rally at Daley Plaza. As the scene of the largest mass false arrest in Chicago history and an on-going free speech battle with the city, organizing for the right to march on Michigan Avenue was seen as a symbol of the ongoing battle to defend civil liberties in Chicago, and in the nation at large.
Besides embracing the principles of “Stop Funding War & Occupation! Troops Home Now!”, co-sponsoring organizations are asked to do the following:
1. Contribute a minimum of $25 (more if having a float in the march and/or a literature table at the rally). This said, the coalition does not want lack of financial resources to be a barrier to endorsement, and waivers/reductions in fees will be available for those who need them.
2. Help publicize the march and rally through list serves, snail mailings, and on local web sites.
3. Take responsibility for putting up M20 posters in businesses / schools / community centers and on bulletin boards in a SPECIFIC area of the city or suburbs.
4. Designate 1-2 members as coalition workers for on the day of the event, assisting in things like security, funds solicitation, demonstration facilitators , etc. on March 20th. These volunteers will need to attend an orientation meeting a few weeks before March 20th.

Why 6:30pm? Why not all day??!!
25 Feb 2007
We NEED to be disrupting business, not just having yet another permitted rally with boring speeches and then a predictable march.
Come on, people.
I applaud the women from VCNV for their action at the Federal Building, and I wish more folks would do stuff like that. We're kinda 4 years late!

That said, I applaud your interest in also working outside the system. There are plenty of anarchist groups in Chicago that are ready to disrupt commerce, get arrested, make noise. Protests outside the system will not have the thousands of marchers, but they are important as you note. The four women who were arrested during their sitdown protest are example of how much media attention can be gotten by a few dedicated people putting a monkeywrench in the cogs of the system.

But I also know how to assess what the vast majority of the antiwar movement is willing to do these days, regardless of your or my views.
Coming up with or demanding a plan that would draw very few followers doesn't make much sense, does it?
I'd actually prefer to have a situation where you were right and I was wrong about this, but I don't think it's in the cards right now.
You can always try it yourself, and see what develops. But I'd rather you didn't start pissing on our parade before it even happens. That doesn't help any of us.

IMO, any discussion of direct action against local corporate war profiteers, recruiting stations ect. before the evening march will probably occur offline. If you want to do something - nothing prevents you from organizing an affinity group, making an action plan and lining up the necessary logistical support.
The key here is initiative.

also, i hope the speakers and emcees build up the anti-Boeing protest on April 4th. its nice for people to have more anti-war actions/protests to know about so that they dont just feel like this is a one-shot-per-year deal.
