26 Area Workers Under Threat of Deportation After Fed Raids

Over a thousand immigrants were arrested in federal raids across the country on Wednesday -- including 24 males and two females arrested at the IFO plant at 2000 W. 32nd St. in Chicago. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, those individuals are "being processed and placed into removal proceedings." The Latino Union is joining other immigrant groups in calling for solidarity with these workers.

Stop deportations! We need a comprehensive immigration reform!

Yesterday, April 19, Immigration agents arrested seven executives and hundreds of employees of a manufacturer of crates and pallets, IFCO Systems, in at least eight states. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say it was the culmination of a yearlong criminal investigation.

Altogether, about 60 undocumented workers were arrested in the Chicago area, pending deportation procedures.

For the March 10th Committee, this is one of the must absurd ever actions of Immigration. All, or many of these immigrants now deported, could be eligible for legalization in two weeks, under either one of the proposals the U.S. Senate will begin discussing next Monday.

"This is happening in the middle of the impending legislation reform," expressed Artemio Arreola, member of the March 10th Committee, and representative of the Service Employees International Union, Local 73, "There could not be a worse time to conduct raids against immigrants who are marching up and down the streets in the United States demanding recognition and legalization."

"It is totally senseless," said Tim Bell, Executive Director of the Chicago Workers Collaborative, at a vigil in solidarity with the arrested workers, held in front of the ICE Detention Center in Broadview. "Removing 50 people at a time when 12 million undocumented workers could be legalized is a waste of time. We call on Senator Richard Durbin to request a moratorium on this kind of operations until the U.S. Congress makes a final decision on immigration reform."

A press conference was scheduled for Thursday, April 20th, at 2:30 p.m., at the Quad, 750 S. Halsted, inside the University of Illinois campus, to speak about these issues and to announce the students groups joining the May Day march and rally in Chicago.

Latino Union collaborates with low-income, immigrant workers to provide the tools to collectively improve economic and social conditions. We work with Chicagoland's corner day laborers, striving to provide alternatives to the labor, civil, and immigrants rights abuses these workers face on a daily basis.
