Rush Reaches New Low in Hampton Controversy"
Bobby Rush, former Panther and now long-time Democratic party operative, tries to muscle his way into prominence by "playing by the rules." Those who view Fred Hampton as a leader for today's movement and not an icon for history buffs are rudely dismissed by the "sambo" politician.
Fred Hampton, Jr. brushed aside Bobby Rush's effort to place himself front and center in the campaign to get a section of street named to honor the Black Panther leader assassinated by
Chicago cops in 1969.
Whether the former Panther and now long-time Congress member from Chicago's Southside is motivated by a desire to honor former comrades he abandoned long ago, or whether he desires to wave the flag of racist oppression to shore-up his credentials as a "man of the people," the Black radicals were having none of it.
Bobby Rush lost no time in confirming the radicals' view of him as a "sambo," i.e., a Black face doing the work of the white racist political machine.
Rush dismissed the Hampton Jr.-led group as "operatives" engaging in "riotous, disruptive behavior". He lectured those who want Hampton Sr. honored to "play by the rules." This from a man who once backed Panther efforts to smash the racist state by any means necessary.
But, wait there's more. Although it was not included in the Karen Jordon article linked below, I heard Rush shout to a reporter as he ducked into an elevator to escape the protesters, "These are the sort of people who helped kill Fred Hampton!"
What!? Now Rush is a revisionist historian as well as a man condemned as a race traitor. He's actually letting the killer cops off the hook, blaming Hampton and his former comrades for their own deaths.
With folks like this carrying water for them, the Daley's and the others ought to just sit back, quote Bobby Rush, the gentleman from the 1st District of Illinois, and publicly say nothing.
