In the everyday struggles against racism and violence we face steep challenges, and how we respond to those particular challenges can have far reaching ramifications - negative and positive. There is a threat before us at this very moment and how we respond to it is no small thing. The Minuteman Project is coming into the area for a rally and recruiting/training session in the Chicago suburbs. If you haven't heard about the armed, racist vigilantes patrolling the border between Mexico and the U.S. (and now Canada-U.S.) then you absolutely must read the articles that I've linked to below. Despite the fact that these people are not affiliated (officially) with any governmental organization and are taking the law into their own hands they have been getting support from people in high places including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California. The story should disgust and anger you but will hopefully make you want to stand up and assert your right to do something about it too. The question is so much bigger than immigration alone and is being taken up by students and youth, immigrant rights organizations, civil liberties groups, and anti-racist activists alike.

Some notes on the Christian Liberty Academy:

For one thing, it's a private Christian school that teaches its kids with something called McGuffey's Eclectic Readers. These things, which were first published in 1836, teach kids the sexist aspects of the "proper" roles for men and women, Native Americans are "savages" and Jews are very, very bad. Among the speakers at the Minuteman Project event will be project founder Chris Simcox; Terry Anderson, a black conservative L.A. radio talk show host whose main thing is to gripe about immigration; Susan Tully, National Director of Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR, or the evil FAIR, as we prefer to call them); Dave Gorak, Midwest Coalition for Immigration Reform, Keith Butler, U.S. Senate candidate for Michigan, Kevin Fobbs, Michigan/Ontario Border Watch; Frank Penn, retired Illinois State Trooper; and others.

On October 7-9 in Tucson, the Randy Graf for Congress campaign will be hosting "BorderFest 2005," an event to push a racist, anti-Latino ideology and to encourage a further militarization of the US-Mexico border (www.azborderfest.com). The speaker list reads like a Who's Who of Southwest xenophobes. There will be seminars encouraging people to join vigilante, anti-immigrant patrols, and spreading mythic tales of a Mexican plot to conquer the Southwest states.

These groups use the same hate-based rhetoric and tactics that Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan have used throughout history (just replace "Jew" with "Mexican"). In fact, neo-Nazis and the KKK have lauded vigilantes like the Minute Man Project (major participants in Borderfest 2005) and used their activities as a cover for recruiting. Minutemen co-founder Jim Gilchrist has been involved with the neo-Nazi affiliated Council of Conservative Citizens for a number of years.

The Minutemen and their BorderFest friends use racist, nationalistic and xenophobic rhetoric to stir up hatred and violence against Latinos and other immigrants. They blame Latinos for gangs, drugs, crime, exotic diseases (!), and the destruction of “American” culture. They claim that because “Arab terrorists” look like Latinos, they could come across the border to attack the US! These racist claims serve to normalize a fear and hatred of immigrants, making the rhetoric of more overtly white supremacist groups like the National Alliance and the KKK more publicly acceptable. In addition, by rallying public support for disastrous militarized border policies, the Minutemen and their ilk make it more likely that we will continue to see an accelerated rate of deaths in the desert, destruction of desert ecosystems and disruption of indigenous communities.

We call upon everyone who is concerned about this meeting to telephone, fax and email the United Sports Arizona Race Park and demand that the event be canceled. We will not tolerate this kind of racist fearmongering and recruiting in our community. We are calling for an emergency phone/email jam of the venue, and are letting it be known that if the meeting is not canceled, the community will be out in force to protest these racist, fear-peddling fools!

Please contact the United Sports Arizona Race Park (USARP) and let them know how you feel about them laying out the welcome mat for fascists. You may wish to point out that while everyone may have the right to speak, USARP has no responsibility to let racists rally on its private property! By hosting this event, USARP is facilitating racist recruiting and contributing to a climate in which hatred and violence against Latinos are becoming increasingly mainstream. USARP can claim to be “neutral” about this event, but actions speak louder than words….

You can't "stop the Minutemen." They are not breaking any laws and are acting fully within their rights (unlike the illegal immigrants they are identifying and having deported).

Good luck though, hopefully you'll create such a spectacle the media will cover the event and the Minutemen will get some good P.R.

Here's an idea, why don't you try to illegally enter another country (try New Zealand), carry forged documents and see how you're treated when you are caught. Would you really hold it against a group of citizens, whose country you violated, to demand your deportation? But of course that will never happen because most of you at least have the energy and convictions to work within your country of citizenship to make it a better place - unlike those illegals who flee their own countries - and are often disdained by their own fellow countrymen who choose to stay as patriots in their homeland.

The war to grab about one-half of Mexico was started by US president Polk who felt the US had a "manifest destiny" to go from sea to shining sea. Abraham Lincoln condemned the war, and Ulysses S. Grant, who fought in it, later called it "US aggression, pure and simple."

I am currently a senior student at Christian Liberty Academy. I saw some signs laying around one of our classrooms one day, and I asked a teacher what they were from. Some rally, apparently, so I looked it up and: lo and behold, this. For the record: The only thing I know about McGuffey's eclectic reader is that it isnt taught at our school. Women are not demeaned, and men are not glorified; the only true limit on women they teach is that they cannot become pastors.

We have a football field, and little league football teams play there; we ourselves don't have a football field. Renting out the field should not change peoples' view of our school regarding football. We rent our school our for a lot of things; some we support, some we do to pay the bills. You disagree with the Minutemen. Fine. Don't call the school sexist and evil just because it's name is involved in some meeting.
