Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

Read. Write. Resist. From the newswire: "Over 30 anti-war protestors at Morton West High School in Berwyn face expulsion for a demonstration at the school on Thursday…More than 70 students participated in a sit-in against the Iraq War on All Saint's Day, Thursday, November 1st. It began third hour when dozens of students gathered quietly in the lunchroom at Morton West High School and refused to leave.

"Students report that they were promised that there would be no charges besides cutting classes if they took their protest outside so as not to disturb the school day. The students complied, and were led to a corner outside the cafeteria where they sang songs and held signs while classes resumed.

"The school called the homes of many of the protestors. Those whose parents arrived before the end of school and took their students home, or left before the protest ended at the final bell, received 3-5 days suspension. All others, an estimated 37 received 10 days suspension and expulsion papers. Parents report that [school Superindendent Ben] Nowakowski stated those who are seventeen will also face police charges." To err is human, especailly in young people. They need a small dose of forgiveness, not criminalization. In Illinois even youngsters convicted of crimes and after serving time are afforded the dignity of having their records sealed. Are these kids criminals? Common sense says no. Do we want to run a school or ruin kids lives? James F. Ward, retired inner city school teacher. urokward (at) yahoo.com

The kids stood up for what they believed in a non-violent way. The right to protest is a basic right. To keep the school running, I understand consequences are imperative, however expulsion is overboard and sends a message to submit and shut-up. Good Luck to the parents and students!

Re: Re: Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

That is an excellent point. I think we all understand that civil disobedience comes with a certain set of consequences. Afterall, the term does use the term "disobedience" meaning that to take part in the action is to break a certain established rule. Yet, this is an instance of excessive disciplinary action. If it was just detentions, hardly anyone would be complaining....

Let this be a reminder to us all that the right wing, when in power, will do whatever it takes to silence its opposition, especially that its position (continued war) is unpopular. It is hard to believe that such punishment would be meted out it if weren't for political motives. Can we get the ACLU on our side to help out these kids.

Re: Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

Expell at least for one year. If you want to protest do it outside school on your own personal time. It's your personal opinion, express it in the appropriate place. Punish these morons in a way that will make other bored juvenile idiots think twice.

Re: Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

We need to get these kids through the system and holding diplomas. Enlistment numbers and standards are far to low already. By allowing protesters the easy out of expulsion, our investment in the budding Iraqi democracy risks running dry on young healthy 18 year old lungs, legs, hearts, livers, skulls, flesh, and blood. Besides, after the attack on Iran and reinstatement of the draft, we will need every able bodied youth available. I say let them have their little protest and graduate them. It is not as if there lives depend on their voices being heard. Lord knows the education system and federal government will look out for their best interest cradle to grave. Our mature active democracy will surface and resolve the issues of life and death for our children. Get them back in the classrooms and society will make it all better.

Give them medals! It's about time someone showed some courage and resolve in this den of torturers and enablers. Medals for the heroes and heroines of Morton West!

Re: Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

Institutions of education are supposed to be forums of free exchange, engagement and civic activity. If high school were anything approaching that ideal, protests would be encouraged, on and off campus. The assertion that they were somehow disrupting classes is completely nonsensical - they were in the cafeteria!

Let's be crystal fucking clear about the reason for the heavy-handedness of the administration - these career-oriented authoritarian politicians that get put in charge of these mind-crushing factories of complacency don't like having their rule challenged. That is the bottom line. Anyone who's done organizing inside those prison walls will tell you the same.

All power to these students - I hope Chicago comes out in full support and nails the creeps in charge to the wall.

Re: Dozens of Berwyn High School Students Face Expulsion After Antiwar Sit-In

Why are the student protestors being expelled for cutting class? I am certain that this is not the way class cutting is usually handled at the school. At most high schools, a student is
marked "truant" if the absence is unexcused. The student is then required to attend after-school detention for each truancy. If all students who cut class were expelled, the school would obviously have many students expelled every day. It sounds like the school principal changed the class cutting policy due to his own personal bias.
