Residents, Students Hold Día de los Muertos Procession to Protest Coal Plant Pollution
Call on Alderman Daniel Solis to join them and announce his co-sponsorship of the Clean Power Ordinance
CHICAGO, November 1 – Frustrated by the lack of movement on Chicago’s proposed Clean Power Ordinance and Alderman Danny Solis’ reluctance to become a co-sponsor of the ordinance, Pilsen residents, UIC students and their allies (including Greenpeace, Sierra Club, Little Village Environmental Justice Organization, Eco-Justice Collaborative and the Rainforest Action Network as well as other members of the Chicago Clean Power Coalition) are holding a Dia de los Muertos procession November 1st in remembrance of the hundreds of people who have died in recent years due to air pollution from the Fisk and Crawford coal fired power plants. All declared candidates for Alderman of the 25th ward, including Alderman Solis have been invited to announce their support for the ordinance.
A kick-off rally and press conference will be held at the UIC Quad near 750 S. Halsted at 4:30 PM. The procession will begin at 5:30 PM and will move down Halsted St. through University Village and into the Pilsen neighborhood. The procession will move past the Fisk coal plant on Cermak and end with a rally at Alivio Medical Center at 966 W. 21st Street. Both rallies will feature speakers such as famed author Jeff Biggers and members of PERRO, LVEJO, Greenpeace, UIC students and UIC professors. Activities include live music, art making stations and free food. Attendees are encouraged to come in costume.
