As a supporter of community and social justice issues, you will be pleased to hear about the Biblioteca Popular, a collectively run
community center, at 1921 S Blue Island, in Chicago’s Pilsen
neighborhood. For the past two years, volunteers have been working hard
operating this no-profit community space. In addition to providing access
to underground, radical, and self-published literature, as well as many
other books, the Biblioteca Popular supports and is in solidarity with
people of color, undocumented people, immigrants, the young and elderly,
families, womyn, incarcerated people, queer and trans people, and working
class people. This is reflected in the type of events and meetings that
fill our space almost every day.
Biblioteca Popular accommodates a variety of events and gatherings: youth
art shows and poetry readings, musical performances, free classes,
workshops & skill shares, gallery space for local artists and group art
collaborations, and is a meeting space for various groups. Our current
projects include the Chicano Power film series, a free lending library,
Midwest Books to Prisoners, Payas@s Collectivo, a resource bank for low
income families, as well as a vast self-published, small press, zine &
periodical archive & distribution. We also participated in the
Pilsen Open Studios on Oct 16th and 17th, with a multimedia historical
exhibition of the Chicano movement in the 1970s.
But we need your support to keep all of this going.
Biblioteca Popular is funded entirely though grassroots fund raising
efforts like special events and donations made by individuals like you.
We operate on a very low budget, receiving food donations for the feeds,
and food pantry, as well as running everything by non-payed volunteers.
Therefore, we rely on donations to keep our doors open and get the rent
payed. Unfortunately without these our community space is doomed. And
as of now we are on last leg. If we do not make enough money by the end
of this month the Biblioteca Popular space will be closed down.
This is a plea to please donate to The Biblioteca Popular. For those who
have utilized the resources at the Biblioteca Popular and/or recognize
the importance of autonomous spaces throughout the city, we turn to you
and ask to give what you can. Do not hesitate to give a small donation,
because you can be assured it will help. Since Biblioteca Popular is
not-for-profit, you can be sure that every cent you donate goes toward
operating costs. Biblioteca Popular is a forum for oppressed and
marginalized groups to forge bonds of solidarity, resistance and
strength. You can stay connected with our community based projects on our
wordpress and facebook.
Thank you for all of your support! Please donate!

Biblioteca Popular
