ITINERANT PROGRAM IN TSOTSIL AND SPANISH (Castellano), SUMMER 2010, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, México.

The San Cristóbal de las Casas independent collective, “CHIAPAS AGAINST THE GRAIN,” has organized this initial program of classes in Castellano (Spanish) or Tsotsil located in San Cristóbal de las Casas with the motivation to offer a space to learn these languages in a socio-cultural context. We are basing ourselves in the idea that THOUGHT, LANGUAGE, AND REALITY shape an identity that allows for the integration of diverse forms of communicative expressions, as well as interactions within the diverse activities that such identity offers. For this reason, the program combines classes of Spanish or Tsotsil with visits to different social or cultural projects, themed discussions about Chiapas and Mexican reality, and videos that assist with comprehension and development of both these languages and our unique socio-cultural reality.

The program consists of 2 weeks of 5 and a half hours of instruction each day, or 22 and a half hours each week, or 45 hours for two weeks. There are two options of program schedules, the first is from the August 2nd to August 13th, 2010, and the second is from the August 16th to August 27th, 2010. The cost for the two-week program is $4,000 pesos mexicanos. The deadline to register for either program date is July 15, 2010.
