News & Letters invites you to a discussion on:
Haiti and World Revolution
The devastating earthquake which struck Haiti on January 12 has drawn a tremendous outpouring of aid and sympathy from grassroots people around the world. At the same time it can draw attention to the unique place Haiti holds in revolutionary history. As the most radical continuation of the French Revolution, the Haitian struggle for freedom was a profound philosophic inspiration to Hegel, Marx and Frantz Fanon. It was also a challenge to the structure of racist society in the slaveholding United States and elsewhere in the Americas.
Speakers:
George Wilfrid Smith, Haitian-American activist and Gerry Emmett, “World in View” columnist, News & Letters
