News and Letters Committees invites you to a panel discussion:
How Do We Defend Equality?
Prompted by California’s anti-gay Proposition 8, passed in November 2008 to ban same-sex marriage, many Queer activists joined together to plan a National Equality March for October 11, 2009, the 30th anniversary of the 1st national march on Washington, D.C., for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights. The march has one demand: “Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.
• What do we hope to gain by marching on
Washington?
• Should one of our demands be legal marriage
between same-sex people? Or is legal marriage
an oppressive capitalist institution that should be abolished?
• What kind of demands will help create the
kind of society where everyone experiences freedom?
Speakers:
• Darrell Gordon, Queer activist, local organizer for the 1987 National March and National Steering Committee delegate to the 1993 March
• Elise Barclay, activist and “Queer Notes” columnist for News & Letters
