IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO BURY A CHILD:
ARTIST/ACTIVIST PEACE MARCH TO TAKE PLACE IN PILSEN
On Sunday, August 9th, a neighborhood coalition including artists, educators, and nonprofit workers will march against violence in Pilsen. The peace march is in response an increased number of shootings in the area, including the murder of Jeff Maldonado on Saturday July 27th.
Jeff, 19, was shot and killed when coming home from the barbershop. “My wife and I and he were going to go out and spend the afternoon
together for his birthday,” his father, artist Jeff Maldonado, Sr., told ABC News. “But he never made it home.”
The march starts at Juarez High School (Cermak/22nd and Ashland), from 3pm until 6pm. All are welcome, and all are encouraged to bring art, music, creativity, and a good attitude. Partners include St. Pius (Father Brendan and parish), St. Procopius (Father Connelly and parish), Pros Arts, Resurrection Projects, Casa Atzlan, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, and the 25th Ward Staff.
“Our mission,” says organizer Michael Hernandez de Luna, “is to unite the community as one, and to find a solution together to curb violence.”
