Dennis Kucinich pushes for universal healthcare at a rally in Aurora August 2
Kucinich Brings Fight for Healthcare Reform to Aurora August 2
Aurora – Congressperson Dennis Kucinich (OH-10) is featured at a "Healthcare Speakout" in Aurora, tomorrow, August 2, at the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave, starting at 4 p.m. Kucinich continues to build momentum for HR 676, the United States Healthcare Insurance Bill, that provides healthcare for all based on a Medicare model. "The Kucinich plan provides healthcare for all,” said Reverend Geri Solomon of Inner City Advocates, an event sponsor. She adds, “Healthcare should be a right in this country, not a privilege.” Congress is considering several healthcare plans including HR 676, and President Obama has promised reform this year. Yesterday, Democrats, including Jan Schakowsky and Bobby Rush, guaranteed that HR 676 will come before the House for a vote this year. A similar bill is before the Illinois General Assembly, HB 311. “Medicare for All” would allow people to see any doctor they choose and would be paid for by recovering the 25-30% of every healthcare dollar that currently goes towards administrative costs and shareholder profit. (See http://
www.pnhp.org ) Other speakers featured will be Dr. Anne Scheetz, John Wojcik, Dan Kenney, John Laesch, Matt Reichel, and Rich Whitney. Whitney is a long-time single payer advocate and is running for governor again as a Green.
“We're coming together to get profits out of healthcare," said Siobhan Kolar, who is helping to organize the event and is a member of West Suburban Faith-based PEACE Coalition (
www.faithpeace.org). "Many of us as individuals helped organize for President Obama because he said he would put people before corporations--we're not seeing that yet."
A voluntary collection will be taken to cover the costs of the event.
Sponsors of the event include Inner City Advocates, Illinois Single Payer Coalition, Healthcare for All Illinois, Aurora for Peace and Justice, Fox Valley Citizens for Peace & Justice, CodePINK (Chicago), DuPage Democrats, DuPage Green Party, Progressive Democrats of America (Illinois), Progressive Democrats of Illinois, DuPage Peace through Justice Coalition, Americans for Democratic Action (NE IL Chapter), Oak Park Coalition for Truth & Justice, DeKalb Interfaith Coalition for Peace & Justice, PAL (Progressive Action League), Rainbow Push (Elgin), and West Suburban Faith-based PEACE Coalition.
