NEW DATE: The new date for the Rally is Wednesday July 8 at noon. This is will be a fantastic, kid-friendly event. Bring family and friends. We are documenting, and we need you to be in it! (We had to change the date from June 30 so we don't conflict with the huge "stop the doomsday budget" convergence at the Thompson Center.)
TERRIBLE NEWS: A man died at Tamms died on June 23, 2009. He was mentally ill and had endured supermax isolation in Tamms for 10 years. Two weeks before his death he wrote a long grievance begging for help and asking: "I want the following 1) to transfer out of Tamms CC to a mental health prison 2) proper treatment and 3) for my only friend in the world to come see me."
WHY YOU MUST GET INVOLVED: The Tribune editorial did not even bother to take a position on the housing of seriously mentally ill men at Tamms. This rally is more important than ever. Please stand up for him and all the other men at Tamms.
MARK THIS DAY: Also, mark your calendars for the Day of Prayer For a New Direction at Tamms supermax on Thursday, July 16 at 11am the Thompson Center.
Rally Against the Tribune Editorial Board
Tribune Building, 435 N. Michigan Ave.
Wednesday, July 8, 2009, NOON
The Chicago Tribune wrote an asinine editorial about Tamms supermax.
Help Tamms Year Ten set the record straight!
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
Help us deliver Ten Corrections on two giant stone tablets.
Float helium balloons via long strings up to the editorial board window that say: "Do the research" and "Try again, Bruce"
Have your photo taken with the editorial board (smiling "big-head" men in suits).
Collect college textbooks on "Logic and Argumentation" to distribute the board.
Chat with Tribune employees and reporters on their lunch breaks.
Invite Bruce Dold, the editorial board editor, to come out and eat donuts with us.
Demand a retraction. We deserve more from this newspaper of record.
CARRY SIGNS!
"Do-over"
"Read the bill"
"Argue with facts, not fear"
"Get on the right side of history"
"How do they know? They asked the IDOC!"
"May 13: Tribune editorial board justifies torture in Illinois"
"A string of non-sequiturs does not an argument make"
"Composition teachers against shoddy newspaper editorials"
"Grasp that prolonged isolation is torture: wherever, whenever, whoever and for any reason"
"Admit that the phrase 'the worst of the worst' renders you powerless to critique torture"
"Deadlines are tough. So many bills to cover."
"Talk to both sides: it is good for appearances"
"We can't help you stay relevant if you don't help yourself"
"Everybody makes mistakes. Let us catch you up on state-sanctioned torture!"
"You can be more than an IDOC mouthpiece. You are better than that."
