Honduras - Chicago Protest and Update

We have seen three days of blatant violations of the rights and will of the Honduran people – three days of violence and repression. For this reason, human rights organizations, immigrant organizations and solidarity organizations call for actions in support of the Honduran people and against the coup d’etat at a national level across the United States

We have seen three days of blatant violations of the rights and will of the Honduran people – three days of violence and repression. For this reason, human rights organizations, immigrant organizations and solidarity organizations call for actions in support of the Honduran people and against the coup d’etat at a national level across the United States
Reports received from leaders of organizations in Honduras indicate that the illegitimate government of Roberto Michiletti and the army has issued arrest orders and detained many members of congress and community leaders who do not support the coup. Monday afternoon in the capital city, Tegucigalpa, a mass protest in support of the legitimate president, Mel Zelaya, was brutally attacked, leaving more than 50 persons injured, some seriously. The state of siege and curfew remain in place, the country is militarized and the electricity and communication media remain cut off by the military. Still, the protests continue.
Therefore, we denounce, before the national and international community, the coup d’etat that took place on Sunday, June 28 against the constitutional government of Manuel Zelaya Rosales and against the Honduran people and their deepest aspirations.
This act represents a desperate act on the part of the right-wing and its allies to stop the peoples’ search for democratic paths for a national transformation of Honduras.

The reactionary political forces have tried frantically to stop the consultative National Poll that was to be held on Sunday, June 28th. The question to be voted on by Honduran people was whether they approve the installation of a Fourth Urn (ballot box) during the upcoming general elections in November 2009 for a referendum on whether or not to have a National Constituent Assembly to revise the Honduran constitution.

We demand the restitution of President Zelaya as the only legitimate president of the Honduran people.

We support the popular organizations’ struggle for the National Popular and Democratic Constituent.

Stop the repression! Stop the human rights violations against the Honduran people!
