On April 16, 2009, Troy Davis, a death row inmate in Georgia - a man who may well be innocent - was issued a 30-day stay of execution that is about to expire. Troy Davis was sentenced to death for a 1991 murder, which nearly two decades later, he maintains he did not commit. There was no physical evidence against him, the weapon used in the crime was never found and 7 out of 9 witnesses have recanted their original trial testimony. Despite these monumental discrepancies, no court yet held a hearing on the new evidence of tainted testimony, yet they are willing to end his life. On May 19th, every person can help make a difference by participating here in Chicago!

The death penalty is the ultimate, irreversible denial of human rights. By working towards the abolition of the death penalty worldwide, Amnesty International USA's Death Penalty Abolition Campaign looks to end the cycle of violence created by a system riddled with economic and racial bias and tainted by human error.
Amnesty's Midwest Regional Office, along with cosponsors IL Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, the Campaign to End the Death Penalty, and DePaul Student's Against the Death Penalty are planning two large events in honor of this global day of action. Please join with us to TAKE A STAND against the Death Penalty.
