Hear and talk with Kenneth Saltman, author of:
Capitalizing on Disaster:
Taking and Breaking Public Schools
Kenneth Saltman, Ph.D., is Associate Professor, Education Policy Studies and Research, DePaul University School of Education.
Capitalizing on Disaster examines the radical restructuring of public education and truly radical social changes this is part of. It looks at far reaching impacts on the lives and minds of youth, on the position of teachers, and on gentrification or destruction of neighborhoods en route to restructuring whole cities. Saltman argues this is undermining democracy. Capitalizing on Disaster follows case studies of privatization programs in Chicago, in post-Katrina New Orleans and post-invasion Iraq, and he analyzes the rise of charter schools and military and corporate involvement in the schools.
Capitalizing on Disaster won the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Critics Choice Award for 2008.
Professor Saltman's recent writings include Obama's Betrayal of Public Education? Arne Duncan and the Corporate Model of Schooling (Dec. '08). His previously authored books include Education as Enforcement: The Militarization and Corporatization of Schools and Strange Love, Or How We Learn to Stop Worrying and Love the Market. Other research interests include cultural studies and the philosophy of sports and body.
