Tomorrow dozens of labor and community activists will gather between the Bank of America and Treasury Department for a picket in solidarity with the Chicago workers who on December 5th occupied their factory in an unprecedented effort to win severance and vacation pay. Republic Windows and Doors was forced to close after Bank of America, just weeks after taking $25 Billion in bailout money, refused to continue credit to the company.

“Bank of America could not have turned its back on Republic’s workers at a worst time,” said Ruth Castel-Branco, organizer with DC Jobs with Justice. “Government has done nothing to ensure that the millions pocketed by financial bigwigs during the Wall Street Bailout trickle down to working people. As we face the greatest financial crisis since the 1930’s, we need a People’s Bailout that fixes the real economy and addresses the crises in housing, health care, jobs, retirement security and the environment.”

“The adoption of this tactic is an inspiration to workers around the country facing similar situations,” said David Thurston, Board Member of the Washington Peace Center. “The overwhelming support from public officials shows the power of worker solidarity and we will continue to support working people’s efforts to protect our jobs, to protect our livelihoods.”

This event is part of the National Week of Action for a People’s Bailout, December 7-13.
