Carlos Montes is a veteran Chicano activist from East Los Angeles (ELA), one of the founders and Minister of Information of the Brown Berets. He was a leader of the historic ELA High School Walkouts in March of 1968. Carlos has been involved in every major moment in the history of the Chicano movement: from the National Chicano youth Liberation Conference in 1968 in Denver Colorado where the Plan Espiritual de Aztlan was formulated, to the August 29, 1970 National Chicano Moratorium; until today, including the March 25th and May 1st, 2006 mega-marches for immigrants rights in Los Angeles.
Carlos helped found the Latinos Against War group in 2003 that led marches and teach ins in ELA, supported the city wide opposition to the war in Iraq, and fought against the racist military recruitment of Latino youth in the high schools. Most recently he has been active in the campaign to defeat John McCain, and the fight for immigration reform and to end the racist ICE raids. Carlos spoke at the September 1st protest at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. He writes for Fight Back!/¡Lucha y Resiste! news.
