Announcement :: Labor

Economic Self-Government of, by and for Working People

In a working democracy, workers will elect their supervisors and managers -- their fellow workers whom they recognize as the most experienced and capable in the work that they do. Management authority will flow from the bottom up instead of from the top down.
Job Security

Nobody is going to vote to eliminate his or her own source of livelihood unless the community of workers decides that it can produce something different that has a greater benefit for society. Workers will be able to teach and learn new skills. Workers and communities will be able to adjust their jobs to meet the changing needs and wants of society. The livelihood of workers will be preserved instead of destroyed, with added benefit for society as a whole.

The Best Standard of Living

In a working democracy, workers will own their own product and distribute it among themselves on a fair and equitable basis, making all nonproductive jobs required by the irrational market system unnecessary. All people now doing nonproductive work will be able to join in doing useful labor for the improvement of the living standards of all.

A Safe Environment

The quality as well as the quantity of goods produced will also be considered. Goods will be made to last so that they don't stress the environment by being thrown away and replaced sooner than necessary. This will also reduce energy use and the production of greenhouse gases.

A Shorter Work Week

As our productivity continues to rise, the hours of work required to produce the goods and services that we need will continue to fall, and the work week of each worker can continue to be reduced.

With a shorter work week, we'll have time to develop our other talents and personal potential. We'll have time to be the best parents, students, friends and neighbors that we can be. We will be complete -- not one-dimensional -- human beings.

A Just Society and a Peaceful World

People will work together as a unified community of workers, with common goals democratically decided by themselves. Every person will have the inalienable right to be a working member of the community and to receive compensation for the work that he or she contributes to the common effort. No one will have the right to profit and enrich him- or herself on the backs of the people who produce the wealth.

While exploitation breeds destructive competition, oppression, irrational hatreds and war, a working democracy will promote intelligent cooperation, social equality and peace.

Join Us!

Just as working democracy is rank-and-file economic self-government, the movement to achieve it must be organized and controlled by the workers themselves. We welcome everyone of whatever background, career, age or ethnicity who understands the importance of grassroots-initiated change and wants to help.
