Based on the best-selling book by Thomas Frank, What's the Matter with Kansas? exposes how conservatives won the heart of America, transporting audiences to the large swath of the country that twice elected George W. Bush.
A splinter group of a Wichita evangelical church follows their politically active pastor to speculative investments and ruin, just as his favored Republican candidates lose in the 2006 elections. Meanwhile, an activist farmer, "a Populist without a party," bravely revives Kansas' nearly forgotten progressive tradition, taking his message all the way to Washington, D.C.
The Kansans in this movie may have some extreme political views, but they are no rubes. They're complicated, vibrant and often quite funny. They're almost eerily familiar, but full of surprises. We think we already know them - but we don't.
