5/13 Film: La Primavera del Inmigrante "The Immigrant's Spring"

Open University of the Left presents on Tuesday May 13, 7:00 PM at the Lincoln Park Public Library 1150 W. Fullerton Ave. Chicago the dvd "La Primavera del Inmigrante." The Immigrant's Spring.
Following on the heels of the 2008 May 1st marches and demonstrations OUL presents the documentary film of the huge 2006 Chicago May Day and Immigrants Right's march and demonstration "La Primavera del Inmigrante." The director Alexy Lanza along with the producer Victoria Cervantes will be present for the showing. The film is subtitled in both Spanish and English and we will show the section that runs approximately 40 minutes that deals specifically with the May 1, 2006 Chicago march. On this date the United States saw millons of people march in over 100 demonstrations nationwide. The Chicago march,seen in the film drew as many as 750,000 demonstrators, some estimate more. This was the largest public demonstration seen in Chicago history. Following the film's showing we will have a discussion with the director and the producer to analysis the historical significance of this event as well as the ongoing struggles for immigrant's rights and justice as well as the ongoing struggle to combat racist and xenophobic atacks on this leading social movement.
