The World Health Organization ranks the U.S. health system the 37th in the world (slightly behind Costa Rica). More than 47 million Americans have no health insurance, medical bills contribute to half of all bankruptcies, and millions of insured Americans still go without care due to cost. New research has found large and growing disparities in health and developmental outcomes as socioeconomic inequality increases. Other industrialized nations achieve superior health outcomes at half our health spending or less, but face financial and political challenges.

Congressman Conyers is Chair of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee and author and lead sponsor of "The U.S. National Health Insurance Act,"
(HR 676), a bill which would create a single-payer system of national health insurance. Congressman Conyers will address such questions as:

* Will the Obama, Clinton, or McCain plans result in universal coverage?
* Can we afford national health insurance?
* What about the challenges faced by the Canadian and European health systems?
* Would the "free market" do a better job providing affordable coverage for all?
