The music of struggle is always the most beautiful. Whether emerging from the soil of the Americas through the lively working man’s Corrido or landing from a global journey in the intense gipsy Cante, it serenades the heart and proclaims the hardship, struggle and victory of the people.

In commemoration of 7 years of struggling side by side with the immigrant worker community, the Latino Union of Chicago proudly presents an evening of song and celebration.

MUSICIANS

Chuy Negrete

Chuy Negrete, with guitar in hand, performs traditional Corridos, the folk music of his native Mexico. The son of migrant farmworkers who later settled in Chicago, Negrete went on to become one of the nation’s foremost musicologists and interpreters of Mexican and Chicano music.

Luis Montenegro

Mexican guitarist and painter Luis Montenegro is part of Pilsen’s muralist and musical movement. He arrived in Chicago in the 70s and soon became a graffiti artist. Now he is dedicated to the study of Mexican and Spanish music.

Vicente “El Cartucho” Griego

The most striking thing about “El Cartucho” are his deep, sonorous wails that seem to emerge from the cavernous depths of his soul. Hailing from Embudo, New Mexico he has dedicated his life to the study of Cante Flamenco, or flamenco song. He performs music of the Gipsy struggle across the U.S., Latin America, and Europe.

SPEAKER

City Clerk Miguel del Valle

For more than 30 years Miguel del Valle has fought for equality for immigrant communities. Arriving in Chicago from his birthplace of Puerto Rico in the 1950s, he made his way to state senator where he advocated for reform of the education system and to halt abuses by temporary employment agencies. An ardent supporter of the Latino Union, Clerk del Valle continues to work for government transparency and improve access and quality of life for all Chicago residents.
