Youth/Students Rise Up For the People of Iraq and Iran on November 16th

About 50 youth/students marched and rallied in downtown Chicago in solidarity with the Iraq Moratorium and with a message of No Attack On Iran.
On Friday November 16th we estimated the number of students who showed up to resist and declare
their opposition to the Iraq war and the ever looming threat of an attack on Iran was about 50.

People converged at the Military Recruitment station at the University Center near
Columbia College. From the beginning the crowd was very orange. We then proceeded to snake through
downtown Chicago, chanting slogans of No attack on Iran!, No Justice No Peace-U.S. Out of the MiddleEast, Resist, Resist, Raise Up Your Fist-We’re Gonna Drive Out U.S. Fascists, and many others.

We stopped at various college buildings from several different colleges chanting Join Us, Join Us! Samantha, the WCW student organizer talked about the horror of Iraq and how attacking Iran would be catastrophic then proceeded to call for the marchers to do a die-in in front of these colleges. At each school a few students would go into the building to get people to join us. Along the way we bumped into hotel workers who were on strike in front of one of the downtown
hotels and drew much support and applause from them. We decided we die-in there. The people on the street smiled as we passed-especially the tourists-they appeared very happy that we were out there with our message.
We stopped in front of Macy’s and did a die-in there. As we walked by these infamous shopping
places we chanted “While you are shopping bombs are dropping” We were joined by others
including a grad studentfrom Iowa City in town for a conference (she said, 'this is way better than my conference'), and Pakistani-Americans who had just been protesting downtown against the military dictatorship in Pakistan.

The March to Federal Plaza was very spirited and I think people were very heartened to see the
youth and student presence. As we approached Federal Plaza a small crowd awaited us and then we began our rally.

Samantha talked about what the Iraq Moratorium was about but also how the message of No Attack on
Iran needs to echoed in this. Bob Bossie of the Eighth Day Center for Justice spoke how we as people of conscience must do everything in our power to prevent an attack on Iran., Then the young man from Pakistan got up and spoke about the dictatorship in Pakistan being backed by the Bush regime. He pointed out that in Pakistan,
President Musharraf is called 'Bush-arraf'.
Then the student from Iowa spoke and talked about the organizing they are trying to do at the University of Iowa. Two of the 3 students brutalized and arrested on October 27th spoke for the need of continued resistance in the face of growing fascism here in the United States and that despite the fear that the government is trying to instill in people to keep them from resisting we had to move forward and that especially the youth and students had to take on this responsibility.
Dick Reilly of Indymedia and CCAWR spoke about the resistance of the Morton West High Students and how due to overwhelming support and protest the threat of expulsion for those who participated in the sit-in on November 1st were dropped. He acknowledged all the hard work the students
were putting into resistance. He went on to talk about the continued and growing resistance Olympia Port despite arrests and police brutality and how this is sparking a wave of of resistance along the West Coast. He underscored how this wave must move across the country. We then had people in the plaza link arms and take the pledge in a call and response style. The rally ended with a final die-in in the plaza.
