Morton Students May Get Reprieve
District dialogue hints at an early resolution to the expulsion cases.
State Representative LaShawn Ford says that after discussions with Morton West Principal, John Lucas, he believes that there will be no expulsions of any of the students who participated in the anti-war sit-in at the school on November 1st.. Rep. Ford, whose district encompasses Morton West, made his comment the same day that the District 201 Board of Education met in a special meeting flanked by the press and the watchful eyes of a group of citizen witnesses. Although the agenda listed an opportunity for general audience comments, Board Vice President, John Keating, who chaired the meeting said that it was a misprint.
After the meeting, Superintendent, Ben Nowakowski said that the district will release a written comment on the matter of student expulsions in the next day or two. In addition to the students, it also seems that recruiters are suspended from the school for 10 days. Dr. Nowakowski said that military recruiters are barred from the school for two weeks while they re-evaluate their access to the students. The near constant presence of recruiters has been one of the factors cited as an impetus for the protest. Nowakowski maintained that the student protest created a "dangerous situation," because the students's defiance of authority.
