The world’s first self-liberated Black republic has struggled for over 200 years with their former slavers and US policies. On the anniversary of Haiti’s bicentennial, February 29, 2004, the US Marines invaded once again as they had in 1915, and kidnaped the democratically elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who remains in exile to this day. Since then, United Nations forces have been responsible for the deaths of an estimated 8,000 civilians who supported Aristide, according to the medical journal Lancet. Yet the facts seldom surface in a news media that seems to take its script straight from the US State Department. Far from being a “failed state,” Haiti is a people failed by the outside world.
Haiti: “We Must Kill the Bandits” is a groundbreaking work by Kevin Pina, a journalist who risked his own life and was arrested by coup leaders. Kevin’s film will make one debut appearance in Chicago at Centro de Autonomia. The filmmaker will be on hand for discussion and update the audience on the situation in Haiti and the current struggle of the people. Footage in this film has been included as evidence of UN violations by the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Humanity in Haiti, which Latin America Solidarity has been supporting. This is an essential work in the study of justice and about a people who have taken history into their own hands. Come see and hear and speak out.
