This Is Hell for July 7, 2007

Voting for the second round of the PublicRadioQuest.com
talent search ends Tuesday night. Show your support
for This is Hell by giving us your highest rating and leaving
a comment telling public radio why you think they need
some Hell.

Now, to this week's show ...

Tomorrow morning, This is Hell airs live beginning at
9 AM (central) on WNUR 89.3 FM and all over the rest
of the world via our web site, www.thisishell.net

This weekend, we're separating the church from the state,
we'll try to figure out 'The Cost of being Black,' we're going
back to Gaza, we're re-visiting the case of past This is Hell
guest Norman Finkelstien, and we'll find out why radio went
so far to the right.

Our guests will be:

- Jeremy Leaming will talk with us about his article, "Christian
Reconstructionists Are Trying to Take Dominion in America --
and They Have Powerful Friends." Jeremy is a communications
associate for Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

- Phil Mazzocco is co-author of "The Cost of Being Black: White
Americans' Perceptions and the Question of Reparations." Phil has
a PhD in Social Psychology. Phil's research at the Ohio State
University focuses on the factors that underlie racial attitudes,
and especially racial policy attitudes.

- we'll speak with writer Ramzy Baroud about his recent writing,
"The Palestinian Left: A Lost Opportunity," and "Finding Lessons in
Gaza's Bloodshed." Ramzy is a Palestinian-American author and
editor of PalestineChronicle.com. His latest book is "The Second
Palestinian Intifada: A Chronicle of a People's Struggle."

- Linda Brayer is an Israeli human rights lawyer who represented
Palestinians in the Israeli High Court of Justice for twelve years.
Lynda wrote the Counterpunch piece, "Norman Finkelstein and the
Catholic Church." Norman was on our program back in 2005.

- research director S. Derek Turner will tell us about the study his
group, Free Press, has done with the Center for American Progress,
"The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio." The report shows
how the right wing's grip on the airwaves is because of a failed market,

not a cultural revolution.

And our irregular correspondents will be:

- Nicholas Hale reads his 'Fool Britannia' live from Bristol ...

- and Jeff Dorchen will deliver a Moment of Truth.

Drop by and meet the host and staff of This is Hell from
3 PM to 8 PM tomorrow, Saturday, at Cary's Lounge,
2251 West Devon, the official listening - and gathering -
center of This is Hell.

If you have any questions for this week's guests, suggestions
for future guests, comments on our show, issues or stories you
would like to hear discussed, or events that you would like us
to list, send them to thisishell (at) wnur.org

You can email us at anytime but, if you'd like, you can also
contact us during our live broadcast Saturday mornings by
calling 847-866-9687 or instant messaging us via AOL at wnurdj.

Brave enough to be live, dumb enough to be goofy, stupid
enough to think that we can be a regular part of your Saturday
morning hangover - This is Hell ...

"Really enjoyed it. Particularly
glad to hear that there is a voice
of sanity on talk radio. I don't hear
talk radio much, but when I do,
it's pretty appalling."
- Noam Chomsky

"I really enjoyed this program.
The questions and comments were
exceptionally provocative and
stimulating, which made for an
unusually interesting interview."
- Dan Ellsberg,
the Pentagon Papers

"Chuck should be syndicated. He
has the greatest guests. I do endless
interviews on C-SPAN, and it's so much
fun on Chuck's show. It's like a vacation.
But he also does heavy stuff, so I feel like
I'm getting more information than with the
other outlets."
- Greg Palast,
Guardian columnist and BBC Newsnight reporter

"Chuck's a very smart interviewer ... "
- Tom Hayden

"Chuck is one of the best prepared hosts I've ever
encountered and he asks extremely perceptive
questions -- not just one or two, but almost every
single question. And I must say that having 30 to
40 minutes for an interview really makes a big
difference. The guests can answer questions with
some nuance. I'm extremely impressed."
- Mohamad Bazzi,
Middle East Bureau Chief for Newsday

"Not your usual nonsense"
- Dan Forbes, Salon.com

"... the marvellous Chicago-based radio show
This Is Hell with its intelligent political discussions
and perky factoids ..."
- The Sunday Times of London

"Well-informed and wisecracking"
- Punk Planet

"One of the best radio programs in the country."
- Ben Dangl, UpsideDwonWorld.com

"Brilliant and witty"
- Jorn Barger, Robotwisdom.com

"Irreverent, spontaneous"
- Chicago Reader

"Hard-edged"
- Chicago Sun-Times

"Funny and brilliant"
- Illinois Entertainer

"Truth in media"
- Chicago Ink

"Best New Chicago Radio Personality"
- New City Readers' Poll 2001

"Best Chicago Radio Show"
- New City Readers' Poll 2000

"Past the cutting edge"
- San Diego Radio Net

"(Chuck has) tongue like bull: strong and
hard to control."
- Chuck's dental hygienist

"You have to have the Northwestern quote
on there at the end...a little paranoid...I
always look for it, it's so damn funny..."
- Richard from the Onion

"A little paranoid"
- Daily Northwestern
