Iraq veteran Agustin Aguayo applied for connscientious objector status in 2004 after serving a year in the military. After nearly three years of struggling with the US Army to be recognized as a CO, he went AWOL on Sept. 1, 2006, missing his unit's deployment to Iraq, and turned himself in the next day. After being told he would be forcibly sent to Iraq, he went into hiding. Three weeks later, he made a public
statement against the war in Los Angeles, and again turned himself in. He was court-martialed and sentenced to eight months in prison.
Released in April, he still remains under the military's control. His wife Helga as well as other family members and activists campaigned
tirelessly for his release, and Agustin's legal battles are far from
over.
