TEMPORARY MUNICIPALITY ON THE MIDWAY PLAISANCE
EX-LAB, a Chicago-based laboratory for participatory democracy, announces MIDWAY FREE CITY, a temporary municipality on the Midway Plaisance. On Friday the 25 th of May, from 5pm onward, dozens of interaction-based-installations will offer opportunities to "gather, interact, eat, create, think, teach, learn, receive and give."
Participant Ben Shepard explained the purpose of the city as "a way to gather up the most interesting people in the world doing the most interesting things in the world, and see what interesting things happen when they collide. It's an experiment, sure, but so was America."
Some of the planned projects include JUNKYARD NURSERY – where young local designers (ages: 5- 12) will give away unorthodox pots that they have designed and filled with plants grown in local gardens, MIDWAY FREE MARKET, where local social entrepreneur Ben Shepard will distribute over 1000 drawings, books, and fetish-objects. In the PUBLIC AUCTION, deeds to spaces all across Chicago will be sold to the HIGHEST POSSIBLE BIDDER. In the UNIVERSITY OF POST-CAPITALISM, a smorgasbord of the most ESSENTIAL socialist thinkers of our day will explain the prospects and tactics of emancipatory politics. Chicago-based producer and image consultant Michael Yong will create a 7 HOUR LONG MUSIC VIDEO. Artist and performer TRAVIS will create several installations out of of umbrellas, soil and urban fragments.
According to Midway Free City Minister of Green, Hannah Jacoby, "all interested parties and persons of all ages and persuasions are invited to come and participate in the city. Bring an idea, bring nothing. Stay for an hour or stay forever" When asked for a comment, Mayor Richard M. Daley shrugged and muttered "This is my city. My city!"
MIDWAY FREE CITY will be located on the Midway Plaisance in the field directly east of the Ice-Skating rink. In the event of rain, it will be moved into Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 East 59 th Street, Chicago IL. If you have any questions or require assistance, please email info at ex-lab.org. ]
