We invite you to Local Reporting on Human Rights Issues in Chicago, a panel event to be held at the Experimental Station (6100 S. Blackstone Ave.) in the Woodlawn neighborhood on May 10th at 5:30PM. Four award-winning media professionals will discuss the challenges and effectiveness of writing on human rights abuses in our city from
outside or on the fringes of the mainstream media.

Jamie Kalven — independent journalist and founder of the Invisible Institute

John Conroy — staff reporter for the Chicago Reader

Beauty Turner — assistant editor and reporter of Residents' Journal

Salome Chasnoff — executive director of Beyondmedia Education and filmmaker

Moderating the panel will be Steve Edwards, the host of 848 on Chicago
Public Radio.

As a student group at the University of Chicago dedicated to promoting awareness of local human rights issues, we believe that this is a
unique opportunity for journalists—and Chicagoans at large—to reflect on and debate the role of the city's media in providing responsible coverage, for the benefit of all, on what many consider to be nothing less than human rights abuses.

Please find attached to this invitation our open letter to the Chicago media community which we highly encourage you to read, distribute, and
publish. If you have any further inquiries regarding the event or special accommodations, do not hesitate to contact us via e-mail,
phone (914) 844-1921, or by writing to the address at the top of the page. If you are certain that you are attending, we kindly request
