The site of the latest school shooting, Virginia Tech, was also the site of a military college. Cho Seung-Hui, the shooter, had a long history of reported psychiatric problems and yet he was allowed to attend school and allowed to purchase guns. As the article below states, it was very difficult to kill so many people with these 2 weapons.

My bias: I happpen to believe that private citizens should be allowed to own firearms.
I see no reason why governments should have the monopoly and historically some of the biggest "gun control" advocates were also some of the worst tyrants. (Hitler even went so far as to prohibit Jews from owning knives and clubs.)
That being said, when you study the details of school shootings, the facts are always more than a little screwy and rarely hold up under any kind of serious analysis.
Take the recent school shooting reportedly by Seung-Hui Cho at Virginia Tech.
My first question is WHO was this guy?
It's actually not that easy to kill people with the weapons Cho used, two low caliber handguns. And killing the number of people he did?
If in fact Cho was the shooter (or the only shoooter), he had a proficiency with firearms that was nothing short of supernatural.
Skills like the kind exhibited are the result of serious, high level training. Where did Cho train? Who trained him? On these points, the ever-babbling news media appears completely mute.
Very, very strange.
