Books Alive! Book Group Leader Training
Literature for All of Us will offer a fun, experiential 3-day training program for developing and leading book groups using its award-winning program model. The training will take place Thursday April 26 through Saturday April 28 at the organization’s training facilities in Evanston. Pre-registration is required.
The workshop is designed for teachers, librarians, counselors and others who work with young people and want to develop book group circles as part of the regular classroom day, as an after-school enrichment program, or a customized program for groups serving youth in non-traditional settings. The cost is $295 for the three days and includes lunch, a training manual, and curriculum samples.
Participants can expect to learn how to make reading a meaningful and pleasurable experience for young people at all reading levels while getting hands-on experience developing and leading book discussions. According to an Evanston Township High School English teacher who completed the training, “I now actively look for opportunities to incorporate new and more current literature and high interest literature into the curriculum.”
Literature for All of Us is a nationally recognized, award-winning agency devoted to helping youth achieve through reading literature and poetry. The agency is respected for its leadership in literacy program and curriculum development and has trained over 100 teachers, librarians and others who work with youth in replicating its model. Literature for All of Us also conducts professionally facilitated book groups for teen mothers and other young people from underserved neighborhoods in Chicago and Evanston, reaching over 500 youth each year. The organization is funded, in part, by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
