BAM-BAM'S DEATH WAS NOT THE RESULT OF POLICE NEGLIGENCE
Negligence implies that we should expect the cops to have acted differently. Everyday, with our own eyes, we learn what to really expect from the police:
-- defense of the rich, harassment and intimidation of everyone else
-- collusion with the media to create a society where our neighbor may back the police over ourselves
-- racism to keep us too divided and weak to confront them
-- outright brutality and killing without repercussion
All this reveals the utter insanity behind such an expectation of "to serve and protect." The police do not serve or protect our interests- they violently oppose them. Let's be real: the cop allowing Bam Bam to die is the cop shooting us in the streets is the State doing everything in its power to demonize, cage, and murder Kevin.
WE EXPECT NOTHING FROM THE STATE AND EVERYTHING FROM OURSELVES
How do we stop the court system from killing Kevin? There are no clear answers, but we definitely know the system of courts and police won't do it out of their own good will. We know Kevin can't do it alone. Let's stand together against our common enemies and move beyond their divisive game of guilt and innocence under their laws (we are all guilty anyway). Let's reject the media's portrayal of Kevin as "another dangerous black man" and, regardless of race or gender, identify with him. Only then can we be collectively dangerous toward those in power. The impulse Kevin is accused of acting on is our collective impulse, one for freedom and vengeance. Kevin is not a hero or exceptional, he is a part of the bigger us. We attack the State and its systems of exploitation with regularity, but tragically, we do it with isolated and individual actions. The lack of collectivity often quells these impulses. Instinctually, the State then responds with unchecked repression. If Kevin is no longer alone the State cannot pick him off. They have one of us and we will try like hell to get him back. It might be too late for Bam Bam- but it's not too late for Kevin.
THE LEAST WE CAN DO…
is show up to Kevin's trial, to comfort him, to show our solidarity. To demonstrate to the jurors that this is a human being they are deciding the fate of- a man with friends, family, and supporters, not a monster as the State and media would have it.
THE MOST WE CAN DO…
is make it as difficult as possible for the State to function. To take the offensive until Kevin is released…
