Echoing Pre-Iraq War Disinformation Campaign, Bush Now Targets Iran

Interview with retired U.S. Army Reserve Col. Ann Wright, conducted by Scott Harris

While the brutal civil war in Iraq daily claims scores of Iraqi and U.S. lives, President Bush seems ever more focused on further escalating threats against the government of Iran. President Bush's announcement that American soldiers are now under orders to capture or kill Iranian operatives inside Iraq that the administration claims are aiding Shiite militias targeting U.S. forces follows other troubling signs that a new war might be close at hand. While U.S. pressure on Iran to end their nuclear program has thus far failed to reverse Tehran's policy, the White House has arrested Iranian diplomats inside Iraq and dispatched a third aircraft carrier group off the Iranian coast.

On Feb. 11, anonymous U.S. military officials presented examples of explosively formed penetrator bombs that they maintain is evidence Iran is supplying these weapons to Shiite groups inside Iraq who are attacking U.S. soldiers. But many observers, and even a top U.S. general, are labeling these claims as dubious. Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that he "would not say" that Iran's leadership was aware of or condoned the attacks.

Between The Lines' Scott Harris spoke with Ann Wright, a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve who resigned from the U.S. Foreign Service in protest of the Iraq war on March 19, 2003. She examines what she believes would be the dire consequences for the U.S. and the Middle East if President Bush decides to launch a war against Iran and explains why she has appealed to U.S. military personnel to disobey what she believes would be unlawful orders to attack Iran.

Ann Wright is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve and 20-year U.S. Army veteran. Read her article titled "An Appeal to Conscience to Those Who Would Bomb Iran". Related links:
