Chicago Cop Who Shot and Killed Paraplegic Man Goes On Trial Monday

CHICAGO, Ill. – A Chicago police officer accused of wrongfully shooting and killing a 20-year-old paraplegic man in front of his family in August 2003, and then covering up the crime by planting a weapon on the victim, will go on trial Monday in federal district court.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin at 10 AM in Judge Joan Lefkow's courtroom, 219 S. Dearborn, Room 1925. Opening arguments are expected after lunch.

Three civilian witnesses testified in depositions that they saw Chicago police officer Anthony Blake shoot Cornelius Ware, as he held his hands up, in front of his house in the 8400 block of South Loomis. Five witnesses testified that Ware was unarmed. He died 18 days later.

Forensic testing of the gun that police said was found on Ware has shown that it did not have Ware's finger prints on it. There was also was no blood on the gun even though Ware was struck six times by police bullets – in the back, in the back of both of his hands, in the back of his head, in the back of his right leg, and in the face.

Recent surveys have shown that Chicago police shoot and kill civilians at a far higher rate than police in other major cities. In the year 2004, for example, Chicago police shot more people than police in New York, a city three times as populous.

Ware is survived by his mother, Tammy Faye Grant. The family is represented by Jon Loevy and Mark Loevy-Reyes of the civil rights law firm of Loevy and Loevy. The author of this article is also employed by the firm.
