Mayor Daley's announcement that every street corner in the city will contain video cameras within the next 10 years is undoubtedly the most appalling announcement the city has ever made. I understand that he is doing what he believes is best for the city, but that should not trump the privacy of law-abiding citizens.
Acknowledging the widespread abuse of powers by the city's officials, the rampant indignities by the police and history of what most people acknowledge is the most corrupt city government in the nation, the cameras should be focused on the city, and NOT on the citizens.
In the past few years, we have witnessed the destruction of Meigs Field, the assault and mass arrest of hundreds of innocent citizens during the 2003 anti-war rally, "Hired Truck" scandals, politically motivated hiring practices, government waste and cronyism and mass corruption on an unprecedented scale. We've never needed a security camera on every street corner to show us that we are being led by a group of intellectually and morally bankrupt government officials. What we need is a change in leadership and accountability. Mr. Daley, you want there to be an eye on every person who walks through the city. Please be aware that during your next re-election campaign, the eyes will be on you.
