Water Conservation: 46th Ward Rain Barrel Distribution.

Rain barrels are an easy way to conserve water in an urban environment. Saturday September 16th from 3-5pm we'll be holding a rain barrel distribution for residents of the 46th ward.
In Chicago we have a big beautiful lake that we often take for granted. It's easy to assume that Lake Michigan will provide us with an endless supply of clean water. Unfortunately, less than 1% of the lake's water is renewed annually and we're using it up at a rate much higher than that.

One thing we can do as city residents is to install rain barrels.

• Rain barrels help keep stormwater out of the sewers. In Chicago the water that comes out of the sky when it rains and the water you flush from your toilet go into the same sewer system. After a big storm this polluted water can back up into the river.

•You can use water from your rain barrel to water your garden or lawn, which cuts down on how much is being taken from the lake.

•Rain barrels are not just for houses. If you rent, ask your landlord. They're approved and encouraged by the City. They're also great for schools (kids can help install and maintain them) and businesses.

The City of Chicago Department of Environment holds frequent rain barrel distribution days throughout the city. They're letting us hold one for just the 46th ward on Setpember 16th from 3-5pm.

The rain barrels cost $20 (a lot less than they cost to make) and are fairly easy to install. Financial assistance is available to residents of the 46th ward on request, and is only available on this distribtion day. There will be brief demonstrations given when you pick up your rainbarrel.

To reserve a barrel and for distribution location details call 773-293-0237 (The Allium Collective) or e-mail uptownrainbarrels(at)gmail.com.
