The Chicago Police and counter-recruiters

Second po0sting from counter-recruiters today:
Some of you may or may not know, but the first day of the Taste has
been
full of problems regarding police intervention. The first group who
went to
the Taste around noon were told to leave by the police and that they
were
only allowed to leaflet in a designated "free speech zone". This
"zone" is
located by the rose gardens on Jackson, just east of Columbus?

The AFSC interns came around 5PM, and we were lucky enough to be
escorted by
two members of the National Lawyer Guild, Nicholas and Jeff. After
thirty
minutes of successful leafleting directly next to the Army of One
activities, we were approached by two police officers who told us that
we
had to step back and stay five feet or so away from the army's
activities.
Jeff, a laywer, began to discuss the legalities of our presence. The
police
officer told Jeff that the reason why they were asking us to step back
was
because we were "intimidating the army recruiters". We were a group of
7
young female students. Obviously there was no intimidation factor.

According to the commander who came shortly after, we are not allowed
to
leaflet anywhere other than the designated "free speech zone". Some of
the
reasons he gave:
-obstruction of traffic
-conflict of interest with the army
-the army paid for their location
After several other conversations, it was determined that we had to
leave
the premise, or face arrest.

We are planning on being in the "free speech zone" from 1-9pm on
Saturday,
and are planning on meeting the other groups to leaflet/protest en
masse on
Sunday .....
