6/10 Film: The Other America
Open University of the Left presents on Saturday, June 10, 2:00 PM at In These Times 2040 N. Milwaukee Ave. Chicago the Documentary film "The Other America."
OUL presents Martin Luther King Jr's famous speech "The Other America." Filmed by Allen Willis at Stanford University on April 14, 1967 it shows King, the intellectual. A riveting yet chilling and troubled speech, King coolly dissects the American landscape and finds "There are literally two America's." One affluent and prosperous the other a place of "blasted hopes" and "shattered dreams." A "triple ghetto" of "race, poverty and human misery." Future historians will regard this as one of the key speeches in the career of perhaps the greatest American statesman of the 20th century.
Following the film showing OUL welcomes a pioneer of the independent black political movement educator, political activist, historian and community leader Timuel Black who will make remarks and will lead a discussion. Professor Black knew and worked with Dr. King during the tumultuous time that was United States in the 1960's.
