Azhar Usman: The World's Funniest Muslim?
Usman's biting wit and absurdist observations on being Muslim in America have won him a growing following on the comedy circuit, as well as on campuses and in lecture halls. He is one of the few American Muslims who have dared to speak truth to power in the post-9/11 era--and somehow he gets away with it, maybe just by being so funny. Not-so-Muslim-friendly publications like the New York Times and even the New Republic can't resist him. The New York Times wrote "He is on stage, killing," while the New Republic Online added: "In the world of 'Allah Made Me Funny,' Usman is the show. He's not just a person in whom two cultures clash, he's a wholly new invention: a world-weary comic, yes, but also a strictly optimistic believer, a political activist and obedient follower, a preacher and rebel all rolled up into one, swirling the audience's unspoken fears, expectations, and preconceptions in a richly entertaining mix."
What the New York Times and The New Republic won't tell you, of course, is that Usman is 9/11-truth-hip and thrilled at the chance to perform for the Chicago 9/11 truth conference. Azhar Usman isn't just funny -- though he definitely is that -- he's also a formidable intellect who juggles his activities as a lawyer, entrepreneur, cultural theorist and comedian. Smart enough to see through 9/11 and the bogus "war on terror," brave enough to speak out, and talented enough to keep you in stitches while speaking out, Usman is becoming an icon of American Muslim identity and a role model for young people. Almost singlehandedly he is turning the "clash of civilizations" into the rimshot of civilizations.
The Chicago-based Usman will cut short a West coast tour and fly home in order to perform at the conference on Sunday evening; probable start time for his performance is 7 p.m. (Click here for the complete conference schedule.)
